Why The 4.8

After test driving a few new chevy trucks and deciding on my reg cab 5.3 I started asking the question. Why does GM even bother with the 4.8 eng.It cost the same to build and from EPA estimates gets the same mileage with alot less lowend tq.Even the 4.3 doesnt make sense anymore. My old 4.3 1500 I had about 8 years ago got around 19mpg if I drove like grandpa and my 01 Blazer with the 4.3 got 17mpg no matter how I drove it.Im getting 17 in my 5.3 driving 75mph and romping down on it every now and then.It just doesnt make sense to keep the 4.3 and the 4.8 around. The 5.3 should be the standard engine with the 6.0 being the optional .Does anyone agree?

I've got no complaints with my 4.8.... It lowered the cost a bit, and its still got enough pickup to get me in trouble in a hurry.

No complaints here, lower cost, more than enough power. Not planning on pulling any 27' 5th weel. Plus my last vehicle was a honda civic with 115hp, so I dont have too much to gripe about.

i bought one :happysad:

Yeah, but would you again?

HELL NO! If i had the chance I would have gotten an LTZ Vmax with 4.10 gears and all the fixens!! But I guess I learned from my mistakes and will do it right next time. I might even spring for a Dmax, but we'll see. Otherwise, Im not that disappointed with the mini V8. I installed the Evo today and ran 0-60 on Economy (still got 87 in) and it ran an 8.03. Im waiting to fill up with Premo and see what itll do on Extreme.

Do you notice a big difference over stock, now that you have the evo? Can you set it back to stock, run a 0-60 and then put the tune back on and do it again? Very curious how much it really helps.

I ran it on Economy and did a 0-60, pulled over set it back to stock and ran another, then switched it back to Economy and tried again. On eco I ran a 8.03 and 8.11 (different method didnt work LOL). On stock I ran a 8.39. Its not like I thought though, on diesels they have 6 pos chip that you switch on the fly (if at a stop light next to a mustang switch to extreme!!) but on the evo you cant. At least I dont think you can, it tells me to turn the truck off etc etc. I do like the guage options, anything you can think of and the diagnostics. Plus it just looks badass!

Not a bad increase...thought it might be more extreme though. Let me know when you get the high octane fuel/tune what the difference is. Over time I wonder if you'll get better mileage also. If you can keep your foot off of it (yeah right) :happysad:

I have the 4.8L with the 4.10 rear axle, and I'm quite happy with it. I didn't want that AFM BS, the thought of 4 cylinders shutting down and something going wrong with it annoys me. I'll take 8 cylinders all the time, thank you very much.

I like my 4.8 also, does what I need it to do and theres not that much differance in the 5.3 to the 4.8 hp and torque wise. Couldnt find a 5.3 in a regular cab just in the extra and crew cabs which I didnt want or need so with the 5.3 hauling more weight due to it being extra and crew cabs so the power to weight ratio the 5.3 is about the same as a 4.8 in a regular cab. I had a 2004 duramax diesel lly and couldnt justify keeping it cause I dont tow or haul heavy anymore and cant see driving it around and keeping up with the maintance and fuel cost for nothing. Diesels are meant for towing and hauling in my book and not to just drive around for the coolness factor.

I have no experience with the 4.8L, but I agree with the comments on the 4.3L. My last truck was a 2000 S-10 4x4 ext cab with the 4.3L and I got 16 MPG around town and 18 MPG on the highway. The Sierra (see signature) gets 15 MPG around town and 19 MPG on the highway and that's with a truck that has significantly more frontal area (increased drag) and weighs over 1000 lbs more. If these numbers are common, which I think they are, I personally don't see the point of the 4.3L.

I guess I'm also surprised they've kept 4 engine choices in the 1/2 ton line-up, but I'm sure the bean counters at GM ran the numbers and it made sense to them.

Mine is 4.8 too...I like it sooooo...much - no AFM means - less Electronic solanoids to break down.

It has more than enough power for me... again 5.3 just don't cut it, you must be a good Driver too :happysad: .
